Overview

Do you have mobility issues, Parkinson’s, arthritis, balance issues? The DEBA class might be right for you.

We believe dance is for every-body and ability at every age. Dance lifts the spirits, sharpens the mind, and builds strength, balance and confidence. When we learn and move together, we also create community, joy, and resilience.

No dance experience is required for this fun and easy class.  Adults of all abilities and ages are invited to experience the joy of moving creatively to music, socializing and to meet new people.  And class is designed so you can participate either while sitting or standing.

Well-suited for those with movement limitations, issues related to aging, and motor disease and those experiencing social isolation. This class is loosely based on Dance for PD, a research-backed intervention for Parkinson’s.  (Read research studies on dance and Parkinson’s disease here.)  Our teaching artist, Lori Duperon, is passionate about the physical, intellectual, and emotional benefits of dancing in community.

DEBA is not a traditional dance class.  We use aspects of different dance forms together with imagery, rhythm, a variety of music and art to inspire dancers to move in creative ways. Studies demonstrate this type of class improves well-being;  participants demonstrate an improvement in walking and fine-motor skills, report an uplift in mood, gain more physical control and feel a sense of community. One remarkable preliminary study of weekly dance classes over a period of 3 years showed  progression of Parkinson’s disease was significantly slowed.

SpiritJoy Dance for Every Body & Ability offers you a warm welcome to our SpiritJoy family. Don’t forget your DEBA Clas Perk: each dancer may invite a guest to join them in DEBA Class.

“It was wonderful and I look forward to coming. “

What to Wear to Class

What do I wear to class?

Any comfortable clothing that you can move in will work for this class.  Pants or leggings are recommended as skirts are easily caught in chairs.

We will not be wearing shoes in the studio, so no skid socks or bare feet are required. No skid socks are recommended and will be available at class for a small donation.

Make sure to bring layers to class. It is important to have your body covered and warm as you begin class. This will help protect you from injury and help you warm up your muscles more quickly.  Then you may shed layers as needed. Especially in the beginning, layer, layer, layer! Have fun with it.  And put back on everything warm after class – this is the dancer’s way. 🙂
