What to Wear to Class
Do I need to buy dance clothes?
a A leotard and tights made for dance (semi-sheer) are ideal. You may also wear fitted workout wear and socks to start. The colors black, grey, pink and white are preferred. Click on Ballet Slippers below for footwear options. You will find your own ballet class style with time and can experiment with leotards, warmups, skirts and tights as you go. In this attire, the teacher can best see your body and give you accurate corrections. Pink tights and black leotards are classic ballet attire light tights highlight which leg muscles are working and a black leotard provides sleek lines. You will find your own ballet class style with time – so many options!
I like the brands Capezio (good range of sizes), Bloch (especially for ballet slippers) and So Danca but there are many others. I prefer footless tights to wear with ballet slippers for more stability. You will be safest and most secure with bare feet in ballet slippers. (See my recommendations for slippers below.) This is the classic ballet wrap skirt.
Make sure to bring layers to class. It is important to have your body covered and warm as you begin class. This will help protect you from injury and help you warm up your muscles more quickly. Leg warmers, regular sweat pants, sweaters and an extra t-shirt may work. Then you may shed layers as needed. Especially in the beginning, layer, layer, layer and have fun with it! And put back on everything warm after class – this is the ballet way. 🙂
Do I need ballet slippers?
Socks will work and actually are good for when you are just learning to feel the floor, strengthen your feet and get your balance. But you may have to go barefoot to move across the floor. My favorite ballet shoes are from Bloch (Here is a link to their site. I recommend split soles with a string tie). Here is a link to my favorite slippers (I take a 6 street shoe and a 3 in this ballet slipper – 3 sizes down). This is a less-expensive but well-made shoe. The most important thing in a ballet slipper is that the sole is split – that makes it so much easier to point your foot So if you go with another brand, please try and find a “split sole.”
