What to Wear to Class

Do I need to buy dance clothes?

!n time one leotard and a pair of tights will be a good investment for this class. In this attire, the teahcer can best see your body and give you accurate corrections.  Choose colors that make you feel good – you really only need one set if you take class once a week.  Pink tights and black leotards are classic attire because light tights highlight how you are using your legs the best and black hides the bumps best. But any comfortable clothing that you can move in and that shows your form will work. You will find your own ballet class style with time and can experiment as you go.

I like the brands Capezio (good range of sizes), Bloch and So Danca to start but there are many others. I prefer footless tights to wear with ballet slippers for more stability. You will be safest and most secure with bare feet in ballet slippers. (See my recommendations for slippers below.) This is the classic ballet wrap skirt.

Make sure to bring layers to class. It is important to have your body covered and warm as you begin class. This will help protect you from injury and help you warm up your muscles more quickly.  Leg warmers, regular sweat pants, sweaters and an extra t-shirt may work. Then you may shed layers as needed. Especially in the beginning, layer, layer, layer and have fun with it! And put back on everything warm after class – this is the ballet way. 🙂

Do I need ballet slippers?

Socks will work and actually are good for when you are just learning to feel the floor, strengthen your feet and get your balance. But you may have to go barefoot to move across the floor.  My favorite ballet shoes are from Bloch (Here is a link to their site. The Odette is a good value and comfortable design with proper elastics).  The most important thing in a ballet slipper is that the sole is split – that makes it so much easier to point your foot So if you go with another brand, please try and find a “split sole.”
